This publication helps in the understanding of each requirement of the Global Standard Packaging Materials and identifies methods of compliance. Examples are given to explain the type of documents, procedures and level of detail that may be used to demonstrate compliance with the Standard.
This publication is designed to accompany Issue 7 of the Standard and should be read in conjunction with it. The full details of the certification process and protocol are contained within the Standard.

The Global Standard Packaging Materials Interpretation Guideline is intended to provide further information on clauses in the Standard to help sites prepare for a certification audit. The document should not be seen as definitive advice but interpreted according to the company’s size and working practices.
An audit shall be carried out against the Global Standard Packaging Materials (Issue 7). Both the site and auditor shall have an official copy of the Standard to conduct the audit effectively.
Who should use this publication?
Certification against the Standard is recognised globally by many brand owners, retailers, procurement companies, agents and brokers, food service companies and manufacturers when assessing the capabilities of their suppliers.
It is a requirement that all suppliers undergoing a BRCGS audit to the Global Standard Packaging Materials have access to an official copy of the Standard. Companies must comply with all modules to achieve certification.
