Supports Compliance with Standards and Regulation

Culture requirements are included in our Standards, position now adopted by GFSI. The lack of a culture plan is the main non-conformity found in sites and a growing number of companies are also taking a greater interest in cultural performance as they seek additional assurance from their suppliers.

Recognising the important role that culture plays in effective food safety management, we are seeing increasing regulatory requirements emerging globally. A recent revision to HACCP and the Codex Alimentarius states that food manufacturers must “Build a positive food safety culture by demonstrating their commitment to providing safe and suitable food and encouraging appropriate food safety practices;” This revision introduces the food safety culture concept as a general principle to increase awareness and improve the behaviour of employees in establishments. The European Commission, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and State regulators in Australia / NZ have also introduced food safety culture requirements.

Improves Consumer Confidence

Strong cultures protect consumers – the Institute of Food Science and Technology found that there are 54% less food handling errors in businesses that have a strong culture. We also see strong cultures improve business performance. Businesses with immature food safety cultures can see a drop of over 20% in sales compared to those that are more mature.

  • “What we (Site Leadership Team) quickly realised was that by tackling some specific areas, we would not only improve food safety culture, but we should see benefit across other specific elements of the business. I am really excited about the next stage of our journey and confident we should see a shift in our current scoring with the next survey.”
